DesertSoil.com is a personal gardening journal and practical resource for home gardeners in Tucson, Arizona. I created it to document what I grow, what I observe, what works, what fails, and how my garden changes through the seasons.

I write under the name DesertPenguin. I am an experienced home gardener with a strong interest in growing plants within the distinct conditions of the Sonoran Desert. My knowledge comes from direct experience, continued observation, research, and the repeated process of planting, caring for plants, evaluating results, and making adjustments.

The garden at my home is sometimes called Zap Gardens. It is not a formal public garden or a separate organization. It is simply the place where much of the experience recorded on this website begins. The photographs, journal entries, projects, and articles on DesertSoil.com are shaped by what happens there.

Gardening has improved my life in substantial ways. It gives me meaningful work, regular physical activity, fresh food, time outdoors, and a closer connection to the seasons and living systems around my home. It has also changed how I understand Tucson. Weather, soil, water, wildlife, shade, heat, and seasonal timing become more noticeable when they directly affect something under your care.

I believe gardening can offer even more to individuals, households, and neighborhoods throughout Tucson.
